When someone says America – what is the first thing that you think of?

Stars and stripes?

Obama?

Now being from across the pond in the UK many of us would actually admit that the first thing they would think of would be overweight people and huge food portion sizes.

I have to admit that I am one of those people, and I am sorry to admit and make such a generalized assumption. But it is well know that Americans love there food, and after having watching Super Size Me I couldn’t believe the size of the fries and the juice cups – oh my, I have no idea how anyone could drink that amount and get refills!

“Americans spend 10% of their disposable income on fast food each year.”

Now forgive me but I did expect that figure to be much higher. America has long been dubbed the junk food nation all over the world.

Don’t get me wrong I am no angel – I eat junk food like the next person and the reason being is it just so much easier to walk into McDonald’s, Burger King or any other fast food place and grab your breakfast, lunch, dinner (or just because you feel like it) on the go and not have to worry about cooking it yourself or deal with the clearing up.

Its easy food that gives you a quick fix for a period of time but doesn’t actually fill you up so you end up eating more late or snacking more on crisps and sweets etc in between meals. But excessive overeating of junk food does have serious implications on your health – no whether people know this and chose to ignore it is a different story. I enjoy my McDonald but not every single day and do much prefer a home cooked meal over junk food any time.

As you can see Americans have a 47% chance of increasing their risk of cancer due to their diet, not mentions other diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Is playing with figures like that really worth it when it comes to you health?

Think about it the next time you eat a Big Mac or a Domino’s pizza….
